Traditionally in Tibetan society, the day before new year houses are thoroughly cleaned and organised in anticipation.  Food is abundant.  New clothes are laid out for the holiday.

Early Losar, New Year,  morning, before the sun rises family get up, shower, and put on new clothing. The family places offering substances on the family altar; tormas, flowers, fruit, bread, saffron water, incense, candles and so forth.  Traditionally the first food eaten on New Year morning is Dresil a sweet rice dish, often served with Kapse.

Together families visit their local monastery, offering actual offerings and those imagined.  Later, back at home  neighbours drop by, share food and their good wishes for the coming year.

During the evening families join in reunion for the New Year dinner feast.
Losar Kiki

Traditionally at Emaho Center, after Losar morning prayers we serve Kapse and Dresil.  Kapse is a kind of fried cookie.  Dresil is a sweet rice.  If you’d like to celebrate Losar with Dresil, here’s the recipe. Traditionally Tibetans add the root Droma to the rice.  Droma is a snall root that grows in the grasslands throughout Tibet.  It is like a tiny sweet potato with similar taste.  Unfortunately, Dorma is difficult to obtain outside Tibet.  Dresil is delicious with or without it.

Jangchub’s recipe:

1 1/2 cup rice basmati rice cooked in 12oz. water
Six tablespoons salted butter
1/2 cup cashews
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup brown sugar

Mix all together while the rice is still warm.
